NASA Deploys Google Gemma 3 In Orbit
The NAVI-Orbital system successfully used Gemma 3 to analyze imagery directly from a YAM-9 satellite sensor. This marks the first in-orbit demonstration of a vision-language model processing its own onboard data. The experiment proves that lightweight models can handle complex analysis in space, reducing the need to beam raw data back to Earth.
