Māori Text-To-Speech Model Rejects Big Tech Data
Only 4.3 percent of New Zealanders speak te reo Māori fluently. While LLMs scrape indigenous data without consent, a new community-led text-to-speech model prioritizes data sovereignty over scale. This project ensures local control over linguistic assets. It provides a blueprint for indigenous groups to build tools without relying on extractive Big Tech practices.
